Rain, Wind & Fire vs Your Home

Additional concerns on your house may arise due to ash from recent fires and harsh winds. If your property is near the smoke and fires, keep in mind the following:

Although soot creates a smell, the acid in soot residue may be a bigger issue since it can affect the function and lifespan of various parts of the structure. Metals in fixtures, pipes, etc. are susceptible to corrosion from the acid in the soot residue, which can also etch smooth surfaces, such as mirrors or window glass. Discoloration can occur in vinyl, plastic and fabric.

Also, replacing the HVAC filter sooner than usual can make it more efficient and possibly help with any odor. The heating and air is one of the systems that suffer the most due to lack of maintenance, so the filters should be changed regularly regardless.

If you have a pool, investing in a pool cover could prevent excessive debris from fire and smoke polluting the pool water.

Water can be the worst enemy to a structure and wreak havoc if not controlled or managed well. Powerful winds blow leaves around which are messy and also prevent the systems in your home from functioning. Here are a few things you should keep in mind:

Any gutters should be cleared of debris. On flat roofs, the scuppers should be clear so that water can shed freely and prevent water from pooling and damaging the roof. Keep the roof free of foliage as it can also hinder proper shedding of water.

If you have yard drains, they should be checked for debris. Some homeowners have retaining walls with concrete V drains behind them. These drains should be examined as well so that any accumulated soil doesn’t prevent efficient water flowing  from the adjacent hillside.

Adequately painted wood can help prevent water damage on areas such as window sills, fascia, rake boards, eaves, etc.
